You can further your parasocial relationship with me and pretend that I am personally sending you my writing and sharing it only with you (because you’re the only one I really want, you always knew that though, didn’t you?). Maybe if you comment enough I’ll notice you one day… I’ll think to myself, “Wow, what an intelligent comment y/n left on my writing… Maybe I should DM them and ask if they would look over my writing before I make my next post.” Slowly our parasocial relationship will bloom into something else, something more real; a social relationship. We will talk on the phone for hours on end every night, I’ll have to drive around just to talk to you because the walls are thin at my house and my mom can hear me. I won’t mind though, the gas prices in Dallas aren’t so bad as long as I’m talking to you. After a few months of talking and sharing ideas with each other, we’ll make plans to meet up. But something shifts. Once a date is set up for us to meet, the chemistry on our phone calls starts to change. We realize that when we meet in person, everything we’ve said to each other will become real, we won’t be able to keep pretending anymore. Slowly we stop calling each other as much. At one point we even go four days without sending a single text to each other. The date that we’re supposed to meet up gets uncomfortably close. I call you and say that I still want to meet up but I don’t want to do any of the grand things we talked about doing together, I just want to get lunch or something. Oh, and I can’t pick you up from the airport anymore, I got scheduled to work. You realize the only reason you were coming to Texas was to see me, so there’s no point in coming for an entire weekend if I’m only going to have lunch with you. You cancel your flight and tell me if I’m ever in your town that we can meet up. Secretly, we’re both relieved. Years later when you’re married and have a family, you’ll pass me on the street. We smile at each other and keep walking.
